The integration enables embedded developers to debug applications on target hardware directly from CLion, bringing code editing, navigation, and hardware debugging into one development workflow.

Using the Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP), the integration connects CLion to TRACE32® through the TRACE32 Debug Adapter. Developers can control execution, step through code, and inspect variables in CLion while TRACE32® handles communication with the target hardware.

Two workflows are supported. Developers can launch a new TRACE32® PowerView session from CLion, using scripts to configure the connection and initialize the target, or attach to an existing TRACE32® instance.

The integration requires CLion 2026.1 or later, TRACE32® PowerView Release 09.2026 (or build 195402), and TRACE32® Debug Adapter version 0.1.2 or later. Detailed configuration examples are documented in the Lauterbach knowledge base.

Lauterbach’s broader TRACE32® portfolio supports embedded development throughout the product life cycle, from pre-silicon development and prototyping to testing and in-field analysis. The tools combine PowerView debugging and tracing software with PowerDebug and PowerTrace hardware modules, helping engineers investigate system behavior, analyze performance, and measure code coverage across a wide range of processors and embedded targets.

CLion is JetBrains’ cross-platform IDE for C and C++ development, combining code analysis, completion, navigation, refactoring, testing, and debugging. It helps developers understand and maintain complex codebases, with support for desktop and embedded development workflows. The TRACE32® integration extends these workflows to debugging on target hardware from within the IDE.

“CLion helps developers write, refactor, debug and test C and C++ code with smart navigation and cross-platform toolchains,” says Dr. Markus Herdin, Director of Marketing at Lauterbach GmbH. “With this TRACE32 integration, developers can use our debugging tools to investigate application behavior on target hardware directly from CLion.”

“For embedded developers, understanding the code is only part of the job.
