MPL’s Innovative Design for Rugged Embedded Computer wins Gold

 

 

MPL was honored for the Military&Aerospace Electronics Innovator Award

The MILCOTS-4x (PIP40 Family) was recognized among the best by the 2020 Military & Aerospace Electronics Innovators Awards. An esteemed and experienced panel of judges from the aerospace and defense community recognized MPL AG as Gold honoree.

SWaP-C Mission Control Computer with 9th Gen Intel CPUs built in IP67 Housing

The MPL MILCOTS-4x SwaP-C Mission Computer Family was developed with the target to meet the MIL-STD-810 as well as parts of the DO-160 specifications. The solution is installed in a compact IP67 housing with a total of four or more MIL D-38999 connectors.

Innovative Impact

Rugged embedded computer used in the industry are mostly equipped with standard connector. These are placed on the main PCB and add-ons are wired to the housing front. This is in most cases sufficient for Industrial application but not for applications in the defense. The environment specification are much more severe and require a different approach to last reliable over years in its application.

Solution

Instead of wires to the in defense demanded D-38999 connectors, we use Ridged-Flex PCB with solder connectors to eliminate the standard used wiring. Generally the wire dimension is too small for a D-38999 connector and to big for the onboard high density connectors. This can be overcome with a Ridget-Flex PCB for each connector and a mating high density connector for the main PCB. With this unique solution, the connections will be reliable over the lifetime of the product and will easily withstand any shock and/or vibration condition.

This can only be done, as MPL AG engineers all hardware (electronics as well as mechanics) locally at MPL AG in Switzerland with our own engineering team.
